Yesterday I saw an exhibit, "FOTO: Modernity in Central Europe, 1918-1945," at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The following words described a section of 1920's-1930's photojournalism:
"Whether in the city or the countryside, however, advocates for photography as a political instrument never lost sight of it's value as art. Activist documentary work was not set in opposition to art, but was claimed as the ultimate stage in an evolving consciousness of photography's revolutionary artistic potential."
